Boswellic acids are a series of pentacyclic triterpene molecules which are produced by plants in the genus Boswellia. Like many other terpenes, boswellic acids appear in the resin of the plant which exudes them; it is estimated that they make up 30% of the resin of Boswellia serrata. The boswellic acids are organic acids, consisting of a pentacyclic triterpene, a carboxyl group and at least one other functional group. Alpha-boswellic acid and beta-boswellic acid, C30H48O3 both have an additional hydroxyl group; they differ only in their triterpene structure. Acetyl-alpha-boswellic acid and acetyl-beta-boswellic acid, C32H50O4, replace the hydroxyl group with an acetyl group.Other boswellic acids include the keto-boswellic acids and their acetyl counterparts.

Oleuropein is a chemical compound found in olive leaf from the olive tree (and leaves of privet) together with other closely related compounds such as 10-hydroxyoleuropein, ligstroside, and 10-hydroxyligstroside. All these compounds are tyrosol esters of elenolic acid that are further hydroxylated and glycosylated. Oleuropein and its metabolite hydroxytyrosol have powerful antioxidant activity both in vivo and in vitro and give extra-virgin olive oil its bitter, pungent taste. Oleuropein preparations have been claimed to strengthen the immune system.

Bacopa monniera, also referred to as Bacopa monnieri, Herpestis monniera, water hyssop, and 'Brahmi,' has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for centuries. Traditionally, it was used as a brain tonic to enhance memory development, learning and concentration, and to provide relief to patients with anxiety or epileptic disorders. The plant has also been used in India and Pakistan as a cardiac tonic. digestive aid, and to improve respiratory function in cases of bronchoconstriction.

Found growing in hot, swampy regions around the world, from India to the southern United States, the herb gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has a storied past. Centuries ago, practitioners of the ancient Hindu system of healing known as Ayurveda began using this creeping perennial therapeutically. It was the leaves--fan-shaped when grown in water but small and thin when grown on land--that were most useful for medicinal purposes, including the control of skin problems. By the l880s, gotu kola's reputation for treating skin and other disorders had spread throughout Asia to Europe. Due to the similarity in their names, gotu kola is sometimes confused with kola nut, a caffeine-containing stimulant used to produce cola beverages. In fact, the two are not related.

• The enduring popularity of gotu kola has been attributed to active ingredients known as triterpenes. These substances are believed to enhance the production of the tough, fibrous protein known as collagen, which is found in cartilage, bones, and connective tissues. Triterpenes also help to keep blood vessels strong and assist in producing essential neurotransmitters, the brain's chemical messengers.
• When applied externally as part of a compress, gotu kola encourages the healing of burns, wounds, and various skin irritations. Some studies suggest that you can apply a gotu kola ointment directly to affected areas to promote healing as well.
• Taken internally, gotu kola is widely used to minimize varicose veins, boost memory, sharpen the mind in general, and stall memory loss related to Alzheimer's disease. It has even shown promise in treating scleroderma (an autoimmune disorder) and in controlling cellulite because of its ability to reinforce the structure of connective tissue. In one study, very good results appeared after three months in 58% of the 65 patients taking gotu kola for cellulite.
• Gotu kola has even been tested for reducing inflammation and improving liver function in people with alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other conditions that involve scarring and hardening of tissues in this large organ.

Broccoli is also called cauliflower. It is the mutation of brassica oleracea, which belongs to brassica, cruciferae. The edible part is the green tender flower stalk and bud. It is obtained from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts or cabbages. The enzyme myrosinase transforms glucoraphanin, a glucosinolate, into sulforaphane upon damage to the plant (such as from chewing). Young sprouts of broccoli and cauliflower are particularly rich in glucoraphanin.

In the late 1980s, scientists realized that alpha-lipoic acid, a compound initially classified as a vitamin when it was discovered three decades earlier, possessed potent antioxidant properties that could prevent healthy cells from getting damaged by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals. In fact, this vitaminlike compound has proved to be many times more potent than such old guard antioxidants as vitamins C and E. As a perk, it even recycles C and E (as well as other antioxidants), enhancing their effectiveness. Because it dissolves in both water and fat, this so-called "universal antioxidant" is able to scavenge more wayward free-radical cells than most antioxidants, the majority of which tend to dissolve in either fat or water but not both. Alpha-lipoic acid can reach tissues composed mainly of fat, such as the nervous system, as well as those made mainly of water, such as the heart.
